Formerly known as the Democratic Party (DP), the Democratic Alliance (DA) was formed in 2000. The party became known as the DA in 2000 when the DP and New National Party merged. The DA has grown to become the official opposition party to the ANC. They won 12.37% of the vote in the 2004 elections. (AFP)
