Before entering politics, Helen Zille was a journalist, and is known for her role in exposing the truth behind Steve Biko's death. She became a member of the DP in the 1990’s and was elected to provincial parliament in 1999, as MEC of Education. In 2006 she was elected mayor of Cape Town, and was elected as the leader of the DA in 2007. In 2008 Zille won the World Mayor of the Year award. (Theana Calitz, Beeld)
