The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) was formed in 1975 under the leadership of Mangosuthu Buthelezi. Initially called the Inkatha National Cultural Liberation Movement, it was renamed IFP in 1999. The IFP and ANC have a contentious history, with fighting between party supporters dating back to the 1980s and 1990s. The IFP received the third highest number of votes in the 2004 national elections with 6.97% of the vote. (Rajesh Jantilal, AFP)
