Bantu Holomisa was commander of the Transkei Defence Force from 1987 to 1994. From 1994 to 1996 he served as a Member of Parliament with the ANC. In 1996 he was expelled from the ANC after a disagreement with the party regarding his testimony at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission about activities in the Transkei. He was a founding member of the UDM and has led the party since 1998 . (Werner Beukes, Sapa)
