Jacob Zuma engaged in politics at an early age, joining the African National Congress (ANC) in 1959. He became an active member of Umkhonto we Sizwe, the armed wing of the ANC in 1962, following the banning of the ANC in 1960. He reportedly joined the South African Communist Party (SACP) in 1963.
